Newsletter for the week of 2-28

Reading: This week in reading we will continue to work on using context clues and affixes to define words.  We will also work on using multiple meaning words, and reading charts.  The students will also work on poems and a TFK magazine on Friday.

Book Report:  The next book report is due on Monday, February 28.  This book must be a historical fiction.  For this report, they need to make a 3x3 quilt block with each of the squares being about 8x8 inches.  They need to share something from the book in each of the 9 squares.  Examples would be: characters, setting, summary, illustration, their favorite part, conflict, etc.  They need to make sure all 9 squares are filled in, and they will share their quilt with the class.

Math: In math we started unit 9.  The first three lessons of this unit focused on reading and graphing coordinate pairs.  We also learned about finding the area of rectangles.  Last week we learned about using the rectangle method to find the area of triangles and parallelograms.  This week we will learn how to find the volume of rectangualr prisms.  The students will also learn the relationship between a liter, cubic centimeter, and miililter.
Writing: This week in writing we will continue to write a persuasive paper which will focus on school uniforms.

Science: This week in science we will start learning about stars.  In the first lesson the students learned about the sun and the layers of the sun.  Then they learned about the different star sizes, distances, star colors and what the colors mean.  This week we will continue to focus on star birth, death, and galaxies.  We will also focus on the different constellations.
