Reading: This week in reading we will finsh the story The Island of the Blue Dolphins. With this story, we will focus on making inferences and analogies. The extended response will be an ongoing skill. The following is the extended response question for this week. What are Karana's personality traits? Use information from the text and your own ideas to answer the question. We will also continue to work on using context clues to define words. Time for Kids will also be used this week. We will apply survey strategies while reading this text and work on inferences and vocabulary.
Book Report: The next book report is due on Friday, December 17. The genre for this book report is a biography or autobiography. The students will create a power point for this project, and it will be done at school. The following information is required:
- Photo Collage
- Birth and Childhood
- Education
- Adulthood - Family and jobs they had before becoming famous
- What made them famous
- Interesting facts about your person
- Later Years/Death
Writing: We have finished writing our expository paper and will continue to work on poetry. The students will learn about the Cinquain, Limerick, Haiku, Tanka, 5W poetry, and Dial-a-Poem. A Limerick is a comical poem consisting of five lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme. A Haiku is a Japanese poem which focuses on nature. This poem contains three lines and each line must have a certain amount of syllables. Line 1 is 5 syllables. Line 2 is 7 syllables, and line 3 is 5 syllables. A Tanka poem focuses on the seasons. This poem is 5 lines with a 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 pattern.
Science: This week in science we will learn about the basic parts of an atom. The proton has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus. The neutron has no charge and is also located in the nucleus. The electron has a negative charge and is located in the outer shells of the atom. The students will also learn about an element and how to read the periodic table of elements. On Friday, we will learn about a molecule, and the students will build a 3D model of a salt molecule.
Social Studies: On Monday we will finish testing chapter 6.
