Newsletter for the week of 12-13
Reading: This week in reading we will read the story "Everglades". With this story, we will focus on making interpretations from the evidence, minor and significant details, and analogies. The extended response will be an ongoing skill. The following is the extended response question for this week into next week. How have the Everglades changed throughout time? Use information from the text and your own ideas to answer the question. We will also continue to work on using context clues and affixes to define words. The vocabulary words for this week are: peninsula, multitude, scurried, eons, pondered, and plentitude.
Book Report: The next book report is due on Friday, December 17. The genre for this book report is a biography or autobiography. The students will create a power point for this project, and it will be done at school. The following information is required:
- Photo Collage
- Birth and Childhood
- Education
- Adulthood - Family and jobs they had before becoming famous
- What made them famous
- Interesting facts about your person
- Later Years/Death
Writing: This week we will finish working on poetry. We will also continue working on our A to Z book, and our power point for the book report.
Science: This week in science we will continue learning about the basic parts of an atom. The proton has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus. The neutron has no charge and is also located in the nucleus. The electron has a negative charge and is located in the outer shells of the atom. The students will also learn about an element and how to read the periodic table of elements. On Tuesday, the students will build a 3D model of a salt molecule. The rest of the week we will start working with magnets. The students will learn about a natural magnet called lodestone. They will also learn about permanent magnets and temporary magnets.
Social Studies: We will go back to social studies next quarter.

Reading: This week in reading we will finsh the story The Island of the Blue Dolphins. With this story, we will focus on making inferences and analogies. The extended response will be an ongoing skill. The following is the extended response question for this week. What are Karana's personality traits? Use information from the text and your own ideas to answer the question. We will also continue to work on using context clues to define words. Time for Kids will also be used this week. We will apply survey strategies while reading this text and work on inferences and vocabulary.

Writing: We have finished writing our expository paper and will continue to work on poetry. The students will learn about the Cinquain, Limerick, Haiku, Tanka, 5W poetry, and Dial-a-Poem. A Limerick is a comical poem consisting of five lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme. A Haiku is a Japanese poem which focuses on nature. This poem contains three lines and each line must have a certain amount of syllables. Line 1 is 5 syllables. Line 2 is 7 syllables, and line 3 is 5 syllables. A Tanka poem focuses on the seasons. This poem is 5 lines with a 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 pattern.

Newsletter for the week of 11-29
Reading: This week in reading we will read an excerpt from the story The Island of the Blue Dolphins. The focus skills for this week are narrative elements, prefixes, suffixes, root words. We will continue to work on open ended questions. The extended response will be an ongoing skill. We will also continue to work on using context clues to define words. The words for this story are forlorn, overcome, abalone, pitched, lair, gorged, and vainer.
Book Report: The next book report is due on Tuesday, November 30. The genre for this report is nonfiction. The students need to create a poster board with information about their topic. An example was provided on the back of their book report instructions. They need to include the following:
- 6 idea bubbles with at least 4 detail lines
- use your own words
- 3 to 7 pictures
- do not need complete sentences
- print or computer only
Math: In math we will continue unit 5. The students have learned how to solve parts and whole problems of fractions, used pattern blocks to model mixed numbers, changed mixed numbers to improper fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing/ordering fractions, and adding fractions. This week will focus on changing fractions to decimals, rounding decimals, changing fractions to percents, graphing data on bar and circle graphs.
Writing: This week we will finish our expository. For the expository, we used the 4 square to organize our thoughts. Our mini lessons were establishing and maintaining a focus in the paper, elaboration, word choice, and compound sentences. We will continue working on writing introductions to catch the readers attention. The students will finish their power point about them. This week we will also work on poetry. The students will learn about the Diamonte, Cinquain, Limerick, and Biopoem. A Diamonte is a seven line poem that begins with one topic and ends with a completely different topic. A Limerick is a comical poem consisting of five lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme.
Science: We will go back to science at the end of this month.
Social Studies: This week we will continue chapter 6. Lesson 1 focuses on the work and trade in the colonies. The second lesson will focus on the cities, towns, and farms in the colonies. The third lesson will look at the colonists everday life, and the last lesson will focus on slavery in the colonies. The skills lesson will teach the students how to distinguish between news articles and feature articles.

Indian Prairie Scool District will host a parents' orientation to our fifth grade health unit on Human Growth and Development. The district has one more session.
