Newsletter: Week of September 6
Reading: This week we will continue focusing on the story "The Hot and Cold Summer". This story is about two boys, Rory and Derek, who refuse to speak with Bolivia who is new. When Bolivia's pet escapes, the boys realize that Bolivia may be interesting after all. The skills that we will focus on this week are ask and respond to open ended questions using TTQA, evidence, and interpretation. TTQA stands for turn the question around. The students will also work on narrative elements. I will be looking for characters, setting, plot, conflict, solution. The students will continue working on vocabulary strategies.
Math: In math the students have learned about arays, factors, and divisibilty rules. This week we will continue to work on factors and divisibilty rules. The students will learn about prime and composite numbers. Prime numbers have exactly 2 factors and composite numbers have more than two numbers. The number 1 is not prime or composite. They will also learn about square numbers and prime factorization.
Writing: There will be a variety of activities for this week. We will continue working on "storying" which helps students come up with ideas. The students will also create their own fortunately/unfortunately book after listening to the book entitled Fortunately, Unfortunately.
Science: Last week we finished learning about the layers of the atmosphere. The students also learned about the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. This week the students will learn about the wind vane and the anemometer. The wind vane shows the direction the wind is blowing, and the anemometer shows the speed of the wind. The students will also learn how air occupies space, and how air's space changes with temperatures.
