Reading: This week in reading we will read an excerpt from the story The Island of the Blue Dolphins. The focus skills for this week are narrative elements, prefixes, suffixes, root words. We will continue to work on open ended questions. The extended response will be an ongoing skill. We will also continue to work on using context clues to define words. The words for this story are forlorn, overcome, abalone, pitched, lair, gorged, and vainer.
Book Report: The next book report is due on Tuesday, November 30. The genre for this report is nonfiction. The students need to create a poster board with information about their topic. An example was provided on the back of their book report instructions. They need to include the following:
- 6 idea bubbles with at least 4 detail lines
- use your own words
- 3 to 7 pictures
- do not need complete sentences
- print or computer only
Math: In math we will continue unit 5. The students have learned how to solve parts and whole problems of fractions, used pattern blocks to model mixed numbers, changed mixed numbers to improper fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing/ordering fractions, and adding fractions. This week will focus on changing fractions to decimals, rounding decimals, changing fractions to percents, graphing data on bar and circle graphs.
Writing: This week we will finish our expository. For the expository, we used the 4 square to organize our thoughts. Our mini lessons were establishing and maintaining a focus in the paper, elaboration, word choice, and compound sentences. We will continue working on writing introductions to catch the readers attention. The students will finish their power point about them. This week we will also work on poetry. The students will learn about the Diamonte, Cinquain, Limerick, and Biopoem. A Diamonte is a seven line poem that begins with one topic and ends with a completely different topic. A Limerick is a comical poem consisting of five lines. Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme.
Science: We will go back to science at the end of this month.
Social Studies: This week we will continue chapter 6. Lesson 1 focuses on the work and trade in the colonies. The second lesson will focus on the cities, towns, and farms in the colonies. The third lesson will look at the colonists everday life, and the last lesson will focus on slavery in the colonies. The skills lesson will teach the students how to distinguish between news articles and feature articles.

Indian Prairie Scool District will host a parents' orientation to our fifth grade health unit on Human Growth and Development. The district has one more session.
