Newsletter for the week of 1-24

Reading: This week in reading we will be reading the story "Oceans" from our anthology book.  The focus skills for this week are determining the main idea and minor and significant details.  They will also answer another extended response question.  We will continue to work on using context clues and affixes to define words.  The words that will be focused on are gravitational, bulge, inlet, shallow, energy, and generated.

Book Report:  The next book report is due on Friday, January 28.  The students will be creating a dectective's report and treasure map.  They will be identifying clues of solving the mystery that is unfolding in their story and using their dectective's report to create their treasure map.  They need the following information in their notes: the place where the main character starts(beginning setting), a list of where he or she goes, what clues are found there, and where he or she ends up with the climax and solution of the story.  Then they will use their detective's report to make their map.  They should draw out their character's path.  As the path on their map continues, the readers will be unraveling the main events and the mystery of the story.  The places and clues on the map are marked with something to open.  It could be a door, a tree, a book, or something that represents a clue.  Then on the door, they need to write the setting where the clue was discovered.  Behind the door, they need to write a phrase, draw a picture, or write a word that represents the clue.  Under the door, they need to tell why the clue is important to the story.  At the bottom of their map, they need to write a sentence or two that completes these thoughts:

Math: In math we started unit 7.  The first lesson focuses on writing and reading exponential notation.  The second lesson is about number/word notation and exponential notation for the powers of 10.  The third lesson's focus is on translating scientific notation and reviewing expanded notation.  This week we will work on matching number stories to the appropriate expressions.  We will also work on learning the rules for order of operations and working on line graphs.  The students will also be learning about positive and negative numbers. 

Writing: This week the students will finish their A to Z book.  They will also write a story using alliteration.  Alliteration is repeating the beginning sound over and over again.  It can sound like a tongue twister.  For example, Sally sells seashells on the sea shore.

Science: This week in science we will start digestion.  The students will learn about the different teeth in their mouth and oral health.  They will also learn that digestion starts in their mouth with saliva beginning to break down starch.  On Friday, they will learn about the stomach and the three jobs it has.  These jobs are mixing food with gastric juices, starting to break down protein, and is a storage place.  They will also have a quiz over the parts of our digestive system.

Social Studies: We will go back to social studies the last half of this quarter.

Reading: This week in reading we will be using Time for Kids magazines to work on our focus skills.  The focus skills for this week are confirming and rejecting predictions, asking and responding to open ended questions, and making connections.  They will also answer another extended response question.  The following is the extended response question for one of the articles from the The Time for Kids magazines.  What are the benefits of learning the Chinese language?  Use information from the text and your own ideas to answer the question.  We will also continue to work on using context clues and affixes to define words.

Science: This week in science we will start electricity.  The first two lessons of electricity focus on static electricity and that electricity flows.  They will also learn about the materials that conduct electricity.  The students will learn about different types of circuits, how to make a switch, the function of a switch, and about short circuits.

Social Studies: We will go back to social studies the last half of this quarter.

Reading: This week in reading we will continue reading the story "Summer of Fire".  With this story, we will focus on figurative language and graphic aids.  The students will learn how to read a timeline, and they will create their own timeline for the story.  They will also answer another extended response question.  The following is the extended response question for this story. What are the good and bad effects of forest fires on the environment?  Use information from the text and your own ideas to answer the question.  We will also continue to work on using context clues and affixes to define words. The vocabulary words for this week are: geyser, veered, canopy, tinder, dwindled, embers, and policy.

Book Report:  The next book report is due on Thursday, January 13.  This book is a choice book.  The students need to make an A to Z book report.  They will make a chart with the letters from A to Z going down the left side of the paper.  For each of the letters, write a word or phrase that represents a part of the book.  This should be a person, setting, part of the plot, solution, key words, time period, etc. from your story.  Your words should give a summary of your novel.

Math: In math we have been working on unit 6.  The first lesson focused on organizing data and using our landmarks.  The landmarks are maximum, minimum, mode, median, range, and mean.  The students learned how to make and interpret a stem leaf plot, worked on using personal measures, probability, and the relationship between sample size and reliability.  This week we will work on the extended response in math.  With the math extended response, we look at the students strategy to solve the problem, their computational knowledge, and their ability to explain how they solved the problem and why they used those strategies to solve the problem.  We will also learn about analyzing, displaying data, and using the landmarks.  The students will also learn about adding and subtracting fractions with and without common denominators.

Writing: This week the students will continue writing another expository paper.  The prompt for this paper is the following: If you could take 3 things with you to a deserted island what would they be and why?  The focus skills will continue to be introductions and conclusions.  We will also continue working on our A to Z book.

Science: This week in science we will take the test over magnets and start electricity.  We have already learned about the basic parts of the atom.  The proton has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus.  The neutron has no charge and is also located in the nucleus.  The electron has a negative charge and is located in the outer shells of the atom.  The students also learned about an element and how to read the periodic table of elements.  They built a 3D model of a salt molecule.  The students learned about a natural magnet called lodestone.  They will also learned about permanent magnets and temporary magnets.  We are using the following permanent magnets: cow magnet, horseshoe magnet, bar magnet, donut magnet, and disc magnet.  They also learned how to make a magnet and the metals that can be made magnetic.  They learned about magnetic lines and fields and where a magnet is the strongest.  The first two lessons of electricity focus on static electricity and that electricity flows.

Social Studies: We will go back to social studies next quarter.

Math: In math we will continue unit 5.  The students have learned how to solve parts and whole problems of fractions, used pattern blocks to model mixed numbers, changed mixed numbers to improper fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing/ordering fractions, adding fractions changing fractions to decimals, rounding decimals, changing fractions to percents, and graphing data using bar and circle graphs.  This week will focus on reading circle graphs, measuring the pieces on a circle graph with a percent circle, and constructing a circle graph with a percent circle.  Test will be on Thursday.

Writing: We have finished writing our expository paper and will continue to work on poetry.  The students will learn about the Cinquain, Limerick, Haiku, Tanka, 5W poetry, and Dial-a-Poem.  A Limerick is a comical poem consisting of five lines.  Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme.  A Haiku is a Japanese poem which focuses on nature.  This poem contains three lines and each line must have a certain amount of syllables.  Line 1 is 5 syllables.  Line 2 is 7 syllables, and line 3 is 5 syllables.  A Tanka poem focuses on the seasons.  This poem is 5 lines with a 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 pattern.

Science: This week in science we will learn about the basic parts of an atom.  The proton has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus.  The neutron has no charge and is also located in the nucleus.  The electron has a negative charge and is located in the outer shells of the atom.  The students will also learn about an element and how to read the periodic table of elements.  On Friday, we will learn about a molecule, and the students will build a 3D model of a salt molecule.

Social Studies: On Monday we will finish testing chapter 6.

Newsletter for the week of 11-29

Reading: This week in reading we will read an excerpt from the story The Island of the Blue Dolphins.  The focus skills for this week are narrative elements, prefixes, suffixes, root words.  We will continue to work on open ended questions.  The extended response will be an ongoing skill.  We will also continue to work on using context clues to define words.  The words for this story are forlorn, overcome, abalone, pitched, lair, gorged, and vainer. 

Book Report:  The next book report is due on Tuesday, November 30.  The genre for this report is nonfiction.  The students need to create a poster board with information about their topic.  An example was provided on the back of their book report instructions.  They need to include the following:

• 6 idea bubbles with at least 4 detail lines
• use your own words
• 3 to 7 pictures
• do not need complete sentences
• print or computer only

Math: In math we will continue unit 5.  The students have learned how to solve parts and whole problems of fractions, used pattern blocks to model mixed numbers, changed mixed numbers to improper fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing/ordering fractions, and adding fractions.  This week will focus on changing fractions to decimals, rounding decimals, changing fractions to percents, graphing data on bar and circle graphs.

Writing: This week we will finish our expository.  For the expository, we used the 4 square to organize our thoughts. Our mini lessons were establishing and maintaining a focus in the paper, elaboration, word choice, and compound sentences.  We will continue working on writing introductions to catch the readers attention.  The students will finish their power point about them.  This week we will also work on poetry.  The students will learn about the Diamonte, Cinquain, Limerick, and Biopoem.  A Diamonte is a seven line poem that begins with one topic and ends with a completely different topic.  A Limerick is a comical poem consisting of five lines.  Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme.

Science: We will go back to science at the end of this month.

Social Studies: This week we will continue chapter 6.  Lesson 1 focuses on the work and trade in the colonies.  The second lesson will focus on the cities, towns, and farms in the colonies.  The third lesson will look at the colonists everday life, and the last lesson will focus on slavery in the colonies.  The skills lesson will teach the students how to distinguish between news articles and feature articles.

Reading: This week we will read the story "Woodsong".  The focus skill is learning to distinguish between significant details and minor details.  We will also focus on point of view, metaphors, and inferencing.  A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase which is used for something normal is used in a different way.  For example you are my sunshine is a metaphor.  The extended response will be an ongoing skill.  We will also continue to work on prefixes, suffixes, root words, and using context clues to define words.  The vocabulary words for this story are resembled, harness, bulk, pointedly, snort, disengage, and retired.

Book Report:  The next book report is due on Monday, November 15 and is a choice book.  The students have two options they can select from.

• Option #1 - They can make a book sandwich.  There are 6 pages and the directions are on each page.  They need to get the pages from me.
• Option #2 - They can make a book quilt.  For this book report they need to make a 3x3 quilt block and each square should be 8 inches by 8 inches.  In each box they should share something from the book.  Examples would be characters, setting, summary, illustrations, character traits, conflict, resolution, their favorite part, etc.  All 9 squares should be filled in.

Math: In math we will continue working on unit 4.  Last week the students practiced their division facts, used mental math to divide, used a map scale to determine distances, and learned the partial quotients and traditional method for long division.  This week we will continue working on long division using either traditional or partial quotient method.  We will also divide using decimals and make magnitude estimates.  The students will learn how to interpret remainders in story problems and work with variables. 

Writing: This week we will continue working on a book review.  For the book review we will focus on the introduction, summarizing, strengths, weaknesses, and recommendation. Our mini lessons will continue focusing on using the 4 square organizer, sentences fragments, establishing and maintaining a focus in the paper.  We will also work on elaboration, word choice, and compound sentences.

Science: We will go back to science at the end of this month.

Newsletter for the week of 10-25

Reading: This week we will read "Iditarod Dream".  The focus skills are drawing conclusions and comparing ways in which kinds of literature are organized.  We will continue working on the extended response.  This week, we will work on answering the question, finding evidence, and interpreting the evidence. Vocabulary analysis is another skill that we will continue to focus on.  We will work on prefixes, suffixes, and root words.  The students will also continue to use context clues to define words. 

Book Report:  The next book report is due on Friday, October 29 and must be done on a sports related book.  For this report, the students will make a newspaper page.  I sent home an outline of the requirements for this report.

Math: In math we have started unit three. We finished the first four lessons which were on the American tour, estimating, finding the angle measures of pattern blocks, using the geometry template, using a protractor, and learning about the different angles.  An obtuse angle is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees.  An acute angle is less than 90 degrees.  A right angle is 90 degrees, and a straight angle is 180 degrees.  A reflex angle is greater than 180 degrees and less than 360 degrees.  Last week the students learned how to copy line segments and angles using compasses and protractors.  They also learned the properties of polygons and play polygon capture.  This week the students will explore and learn about tesselations.  The last lesson will focus on finding the sum of angles in a polygon. 

Writing: This week we will work on a book review.  For the book review we will focus on the introduction, summarizing, strengths, weaknesses, and recommendation. Our mini lessons will focus on using the 4 square organizer, combining sentences, and adjectives.

Science: We will go back to science next quarter.

Social Studies: This week we will finish chapter 4 which is about Spain building an empire in the Western hemisphere.  The first lesson is about the voyages of Columbus.  Lesson two will focus on the Spanish settling in the Western hemisphere, and Spain conquering the Aztec and Incas.  Lesson three will focus on the Spanish explorers.  The skill for this chapter is using latitude and longitude.

Reading: This week we will finish "We'll Never Forget You, Roberto Clemente" and work with Time for Kids magazines.  The focus skills are drawing conclusions and comparing texts for their theme, settings, characters, problems, and events.  We will finish our comparison charts over Roberto and our read aloud book Island.  The students will partner and complete a comparison chart on two picture books. We will also be working on the extended response.  This week, we will work on answering the question, finding evidence, and interpreting the evidence. The focus skills we will be working on with the TFK magazines are skimming to preview a story and scanning to detect major problems. Vocabualry analysis is another skill that we will continue to focus on.  The students will continue to use context clues to define words. 

Book Report:  The next book report is due on Friday, October 29 and must be done on a sports related book.  For this report, the students will make a newspaper page.  I sent home an outline of the requirements for this report.

Math: In math we have started unit three. We finished the first four lessons which were on the American tour, estimating, finding the angle measures of pattern blocks, using the geometry template, using a protractor, and learning about the different angles.  An obtuse angle is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees.  An acute angle is less than 90 degrees.  A right angle is 90 degrees, and a straight angle is 180 degrees.  A reflex angle is greater than 180 degrees and less than 360 degrees.  This week the students will learn how to copy line segments and angles using compasses and protractors.  They will also learn the properties of polygons and play polygon capture.  Students will also explore and learn about tesselations.  The last lesson of this week will focus on finding the sum of angles in a polygon. 

Writing: This week we will continue our memoirs.  The students have learned about the structure of a memoir, defined a memoir, made a list of questions to help write a memoir and used a visual tool to assist students in writing their memoir.  They have created a special place map, and are using it to write their first memoir.  The students have started writing their memoirs.  Our mini lessons will focus on using action verbs, combining sentences, adjectives, and replacing overused words.  We will also be working on the book review.  For the first book review we will focus on the introduction, summarizing and recommendation. 

Science: We will go back to science next quarter.

Social Studies: This week we will start chapter 4 which is about Spain building an empire in the Western hemisphere.  The first lesson is about the voyages of Columbus.  Lesson two will focus on the Spanish settling in the Western hemisphere, and Spain conquering the Aztec and Incas.  Lesson three will focus on the Spanish explorers.  The skill for this chapter is using latitude and longitude.

Parent Teatcher conference notes went home last Thursday.  I need the bottom portion returned to me.
A field trip note went home on Friday.  The field trip is for the Paramount Theatre, and we will be seeing "We the People".  This note needs to be returned to me by Monday, October 25.

Newsletter for the week of Sept. 27

Reading: This week we will read the story "Dear Mrs. Parks".  This story consists of letters written to Rosa Parks by students, and her replies, on subjects ranging from getting along in school to the changes she has seen in her lifetime.  One of the focus skills is making judgments.  While reading the students will learn to determine if what they read provides reasonable and reliable information.  They will evaluate the author's facts and opinions and then make their judgments.  We will also be working on the extended response.  This week, we will work on answering the question, finding evidence, and starting to interpret the evidence.  Vocabualry analysis is another skill that will be focused on.  The students will continue to use context clues to define words.  The words for this story are ridiculed, dignity, counsel, potential, inspire, correspondence, and mentor.

Math: In math the students have started unit 2.  The students have reviewed traditional method for addition, partial sums, subtraction, open number stories, and estimating.  This week will will learn about probability, latice method for multiplication, partial products, and traditional method for multiplication.  The students will also continue to work on using the landmark data.  This data is: maximum, minimum, range, mode, median, and mean.

Writing: There will be a variety of activities for this week. We will continue working on "storying" which helps students come up with ideas.  With storying this week, the students will continue to listen to memoirs and write down the common characteristics of memoirs.  The students will also learn about the structure of a memoir, and we will define a memoir.  They will also make a list of questions to help them write a memoir and use a visual tool to assist students in writing their memoir.  They have created a special place map, and we will use that map to write their first memoir.  We will also start learning about the book review.  For the first book review we will focus on the introduction, summarizing and recommendation. 

Science: So far this unit the students have learned about the layers of the atmosphere, the three states of matter, the wind vane, the anemometer, and the barometer. The wind vane shows the direction the wind is blowing, and the anemometer shows the speed of the wind.  The barometer measures the air pressure.  The air pressure can be measured in inches or millibars. The students have also learned five properties of air.  These properties are: hot air rises, air takes up space, air is lighter than water, air space changes with temperature, and what can happen when the air temperature changes suddenly.  They also learned about the water cycle and the three cloud types.  This week they will see how a cloud forms and learn about the four types of precipitation.  The test will be on Wednesday.

Social Studies: We will start social studies this week after taking the science test.  The first lesson focuses on traveling the Silk Road and trade in the Eastern Hemisphere.  The second lesson focuses on Africa's trading empires.

Reading: This week the focus story is "Sees Behind Trees". This story is about a young Native American boy, Walnut, who has poor eyesight.  Walnut overcomes his poor eyesight using an unusual skill to get his adult name.  The skills that we will focus on this week are ask and respond to open ended questions using TTQA, evidence, and interpretation. TTQA stands for turn the question around. The students will also work on narrative elements. I will be looking for characters, setting, plot, conflict, solution. The students will continue working on vocabulary strategies.  The vocabulary words for this story are: quiver, tread, moss, sternly, exaggerate, and compose.


Math: In math the students have learned about arays, factors, and divisibilty rules. The students also learned about prime and composite numbers and square numbers. Prime numbers have exactly 2 factors and composite numbers have more than two numbers. The number 1 is not prime or composite. This week they will learn about prime factorization.  On Tuesday, we will go over their study guide, and the test will be on Wednesday.  On Thursday, we will start chapter two and the focus will be on estimation and addition.
